Tantalizing the Senses in Istanbul

Getting There: It is very easy to book a flight into Istanbul (IST). The airpot is about a 20-30 minute taxi ride to Old Town (the center of all of the famous landmarks). I would recommend using Hoppa (www.hoppa.com) to schedule an airport pick up.

Rest Your Body:

We loved our hotel The Armada Istanbul Old Town. Not only was it extremely inexpensive ($75/night for a king bed or two twins), but it was incredibly close to Old Town if you are touring the major landmarks. It has a gorgeous view of the Haggia Sophia from the roof where you can dine or have drinks and it also has a complimentary breakfast buffet on the roof in the morning that is delicious.

We spent 2 nights in Istanbul and while it felt a bit rushed, it was a solid amount of time to get a feel for the city that connects Europe and the Middle East.

Treating Yourself:

Arriving in Istanbul after a long flight warrants going to the Turkish bath. We found Aga Hamami where we had the full Turkish treatment. It's a bit like a spa but quite different. First, you sit in a marble space and steam. Then two women (in underwear only- be prepared!) SCRUB you down. Then you drink apple tea and relax until you are called upstairs for your 20 minute massage. If you opt for the facial, they apply the facial mask in the massage room and you return to the rug for relaxation. When you wash it off, you are free to go whenever you like. You are directed through the entire experience and it's very enjoyable.

Culinary Delights:

We then took the 7-9 minute walk to 360 Istanbul. This bar and restaurant has incredible views of the city and had good food as well.

Adventure:

Istanbul Custom Tours We took a day tour with where private day tours were 80 USD per person (Chora Travel Day trips was also competitive in terms of pricing and their rating on TripAdvisor). We had a fantastic tour that took us around all of the major Istanbul landmarks including the Topkapi Palace, Haggia Sophia, Blue Mosque (literally cover your shoulders, legs and hair or they will loan you items to cover up with), the Grand bizarre and the Spice Market. Unless you are really in the market for traditionally touristy things, skip the market because it is full of tourists. Plan to spend more time at the Spice Market. They have great prices on teas, spices, soaps and local goods (that are great souvenirs and gifts).
