Getting Around on a Budget

My best advice for getting around the world on a budget is to set a budget and stick to it.  The following tips are ways that I have stuck to my budget when traveling.

Transportation

  • When traveling for an extended amount of time, Uber, taxi, or get a ride to the airport to avoid an outrageous parking bill

  • Some airport parking lots offer discount parking programs. For example, my favorite parking lot was just 1.5 miles from the airport door and was significantly discounted from the daily rate at the actual airport. They also had a program where you earned free days the more you stayed. They also offered a AAA discount so make sure to ask!

  • Set up pick up transportation in advance with Hoppa out of the UK.  They wait outside of the baggage claim with a sign with your name on it and are significantly less expensive than cabs

Accommodations

  • Share a room with a friend

  • Book hotels through Hotels.com

    • For every night that you stay, you accumulate one point per night. After ten nights, you get a free night stay (restrictions apply)

    • Book refundable rooms so that if your plans change, you aren't penalized.  You may pay a few extra dollars, but it's worth it if your plans aren't set in stone. You can always cancel and rebook the same room at the non-refundable rate when the trip gets closer and save some money that way

    • Hotels.com has a search tool that allows you to see where local landmarks and major points of interest are when choosing your hotel. This is quite helpful when you have limited time and want to stay in close proximity to the sites.

Deals

  • Look for deals on cruises and excursions.  Last minute deals are often offered

  • Viator is a great resource to book local excursions at reasonable prices

  • Do free walking tours of the city that are available. I've yet to go on a bad one yet and they're free!

  • Cruises often offer a significant credit if you book your air through the cruise line. I got a $500 credit on my $900 cruise when I booked the cruise a month before departure as well as my air from Detroit to Istanbul and Moscow to Detroit (I made a few stops between Istanbul and Moscow). The cruise didn't even mind that I wasn't going to fly out of Rome, which is where the cruise ended). They were flexible with me and very accommodating.
