I would highly recommend the land of fire and ice to anyone who is up for an adventure. Iceland is loaded with it!

Make Reykjavik your home base. It's the capital and largest city (and that's an understatement). The information center in the middle of the city is very helpful- really use the people that work there as great resources!

Rest Your Head

If you are staying in Reykjavik:

Our friends got an AirBnb but you have to plan early because supply is limited! We liked our hotel- it was basic and in a great neighborhood. Once again, plan accommodations early so you don't get stuck with a hotel out of your control.

The Blue Lagoon (which is quite close to the airport so if you can, try to swing by after you pick up your rental car at the airport). It is touristy, but if you go later in the evening or early in the morning, the crowds aren't too crazy. The thermal pool is very cool and I think it is worth stopping in for a few hours.

Adventure to the West of Reykjavik

We hired a company called Basecamp Iceland to explore west of our home base in Reykjavik. We went to the Information Center trying to figure out where to go and what to do in Iceland. We overheard a small group talking to the Center guide about taking a small group tour with a fantastic local company. We asked if we could join the group. It ended up being 6 of us and Kommi was our guide!

Kommi was incredibly accommodating, very conscious of meeting the needs of all the members in our group (some young and some older). We told him the types of things we wanted to see and do, and we saw so many hidden gems in Western Iceland. One of the best aspects of going on a tour with Kommi was his knowledge of so many hidden waterfalls and geological wonders that we would have never found alone!

Kommi took us to a restaurant called Narfeyrarstofa, which was delicious!

Some other things that were on our radar but we didn't have time to see were the Landmannalaugar (lava fields and geothermal vents).
